1. The two regions have different thresholds for what’s considered a lake. If the MN wiki were to make .12 acres the threshold for a lake the way the Finland wiki does, MN would still have more lakes

2. I made this post literally in 2013 why is it getting so many notes now?

I feel so petty taking part in this Lake Discourse when the post is as old as it is, but even if we are using Minnesota’s 10 acres as the threshold, Finland still has more lakes. I couldn’t find how many of the Finnish lakes are over 10 acres, but more than 15 000 lakes (one Finnish source claimed the exact number to be 15 723)

in Finland are over 24,7 acres ( = 10 ha = 0,1 km²).

If the threshold is 2,5 acres/1 ha, Finland has ~51 000 lakes and Minnesota 21,871 lakes.
