Keep your fucking cats indoors.
If you can’t make the indoors enriching and fulfilling for them, then don’t get a cat.

No? Cats can live safely and happily outdoors?
Happily, sure. Safely? Nope.
So my family has had three outdoor cats. The first one, Kali, lived up to her name and was single handedly responsible for decimating the neighborhood bird, bunny, and squirrel populations. Before we moved in multiple neighbors were backyard birdwatchers. After there weren’t many birds to watch. She did live to the old age of 17.
Second cat, Ringley, disappeared at 2. Almost every other outdoor and feral cat in town did too, all within the same week, alongside a major uptick in coyote activity. Everyone has a pretty good guess about what happened.
Third cat, Sherlock, is about 6 months old and has currently been missing for three days. He’s a stupidly friendly all black kitten, I can’t say I’m optimistic about his chances.
A fun fact- a few years ago a local Bald Eagle’s nest fell, there were over 100 cat collars inside.
Meanwhile Zinnia and Zelda are happy and healthy inside with their own room to escape the puppy,multiple cat trees, screen porch to watch over the outside from, kitty water fountain, puzzle toys to hunt, the odd real mouse, and walks to explore the backyard while safely wearing their harnesses. Oh, and zero risk of being eaten or run over.
